The Case for This Fabric
In an era of synthetic upholstery fabrics, this linen-cotton blend is a quiet act of considered design. Flax fibre brings inherent structure and breathability — it softens with use, grows more characterful with time, and carries the natural imperfections that mass-produced polyesters simply cannot replicate. The 45% cotton content adds a gentle drape and printing receptivity that allows the animal motifs to read with clarity and warmth. Whether you are lining a bay window, reupholstering a reading chair, or crafting a feature cushion for a child's room, this fabric works where premium natural feel matters more than short-term convenience.
Commission & Custom-Cut Notice
This fabric is sold by the unit (one roll/cut as listed). If you require a specific cut length, custom yardage, or multiple-unit order for a larger project, please contact us before purchasing so we can confirm availability and coordinate fulfillment. We recommend ordering a sample swatch for colour matching before committing to large-scale cuts.
Dimensions & Custom-Cut Policy
Standard unit: Width 155 cm (61 in) | Density 51×40 threads/cm²
Fabric width is measured flat, selvedge to selvedge. Allow 2–3 cm for selvedge allowance on either side when planning finished dimensions.
We do not alter printed unit dimensions. If you require non-standard widths or lengths, contact us prior to ordering. Custom sizing requests are handled individually and may affect lead times.
Why This Fabric
Natural fibre textiles outperform synthetics in both tactile comfort and longevity when used in home interiors. This linen-cotton blend specifically offers:
-
Breathability — flax fibre wicks moisture and regulates temperature, making curtains made from this fabric feel lighter in warm rooms
-
Print clarity — cotton content ensures the reactive printing process delivers crisp, vibrant animal motifs with minimal colour bleed
-
Structural integrity — density 51×40 provides a firm hand suitable for upholstery applications, not just lightweight drapery
-
Natural softening — the fabric relaxes and improves in drape with laundering, developing the characteristic lived-in quality of quality linens
-
16 exclusive prints — each motif is designed as a standalone artistic statement, from the architectural simplicity of the Matchman to the painterly warmth of the Great Pyrenees

Interior Style & Application Advisor
Each print in this collection has been considered for the interior environments where it performs best. Use the guide below to match your chosen motif to your room's character.
Children's Bedroom or Playroom
Best prints: Pink Bear, Pink Whale, Pink Pine Koala, Hedgehog, Polar Bear, Little Girl with White Background. Use as tab-top curtains in soft linen natural rod hardware, or panel-sewn cushion covers on reading nook seating. Pair with white-painted furniture and natural jute rugs to let the print anchor the room without competing with other pattern. Add a small plush toy echoing the chosen animal motif as a finishing accessory.
Living Room — Eclectic or Maximalist Interior
Best prints: Animal Assemblage, Color Owl, Matchman. Deploy as a feature sofa throw cushion or armchair throw pillow against solid-coloured upholstery. Alternatively, use as a contrast panel inset within a larger curtain in a neutral linen. Accessorise with ceramic animal figurines or botanical prints to reinforce the nature-forward narrative of the room.
Study or Home Library
Best prints: Black Owl, Grey Owl, Grey Alpaca, Matchman. Owls have long-standing symbolic associations with knowledge and scholarship — the Black and Grey Owl prints sit naturally in a study context without becoming overly playful. Use as Roman blind fabric for small windows, or as a desk chair seat pad covering. The fabric's structural density handles light upholstery without sagging.
Nursery
Best prints: Grey Rabbit, Grey Alpaca, Polar Bear. Soft grey-toned animal prints create a gender-neutral, calming nursery palette. Construct simple gathered curtains with blackout lining (add a separate blackout interlining) for practical light control. Use the same fabric for a cot bumper or storage basket liner. Keep wall colour in warm white or pale sage to complement the natural flax tone of the weave.
Kitchen or Breakfast Room
Best prints: Foundation Makeup Penguin, Turbot (Flounder), Pink Whale. The marine and coastal character of the Turbot and Whale prints lends itself to a fresh, light-filled kitchen aesthetic. Use as café-style half curtains on lower window sections, or as a table runner along a farmhouse dining table. The linen-cotton composition washes cleanly, a practical advantage in a kitchen setting.
Craft & Sewing Studio
Best prints: All 16 motifs — this fabric is an ideal project material for tote bags, book covers, framed textile art, patchwork panels, and fabric-covered storage boxes. The 155 cm width provides generous cutting room for most accessory and small furnishing projects. Order multiple prints to create a coordinated set of cushion covers or a patchwork quilt block series.
Home Office or Meditation Space
Best prints: Grey Rabbit, Great Pyrenees, Grey Alpaca. Soft, calm animal imagery creates an undemanding visual environment suited to focus or contemplation. Use as simple panel curtains with eyelet rings on a matte black rod, or as an upholstered pinboard fabric surface. The natural linen-cotton texture adds tactile warmth without visual noise.
Symbolism & Considered Design
Across many interior design and wellbeing traditions, the animals depicted in this collection carry layered symbolic meaning that enriches their presence in a domestic space:
-
Owl — wisdom, night-time contemplation, discernment. A recurring motif in scholarly and creative interiors.
-
Rabbit — gentleness, fertility, domestic comfort. Historically a symbol of hearth and abundance.
-
Bear (Polar & Pink) — quiet strength, maternal protection, resilience in stillness.
-
Whale — depth, intuition, the expansive unconscious. Associated with coastal calm and oceanic perspective.
-
Alpaca — warmth, softness, artisan craft. A natural pairing with linen-cotton in a textile-forward interior.
-
Great Pyrenees — loyalty, guardianship, noble calm. A working dog of the highlands rendered with quiet dignity.
-
Hedgehog — curiosity, self-sufficiency, quiet industry — a charming presence in a child's room or nature-led interior.
The Question Serious Buyers Ask
«Is a 51×40 density fabric genuinely suitable for upholstery, or is this drapery weight only?»
A density of 51×40 threads per cm² is firmly in the light-upholstery category. It performs well for cushion covers, seat pads, Roman blinds, and decorative throw pillows. It is not rated for high-abrasion upholstery applications such as frequently-used sofa seating surfaces or dining chair seats that receive continuous friction — for those, a heavier canvas or twill weave would be more appropriate. For curtains, cushions, bed runners, and craft projects, this fabric is an excellent structural choice.
«Will the print fade after washing?» The reactive printing process bonds dye to the natural fibre at a molecular level, providing significantly better wash-fastness than pigment printing. Cold-wash gentle cycles with pH-neutral detergent and line drying will maintain print vibrancy through repeated laundering. Avoid bleach and high-heat tumble drying, which accelerate fading in any reactive-dyed fabric.
This Fabric Is Not the Best Choice If…
- You need a fabric rated for heavy-duty sofa seating or high-traffic upholstery (look for a Martindale rub test rating of 25,000+ instead)
- You require blackout properties — this is a semi-sheer to semi-opaque weight that will not block light without a separate lining
- Your project demands a fabric wider than 155 cm in a single panel without a seam
- You are sewing outdoor soft furnishings — this fabric is not treated for UV resistance or moisture and will degrade outdoors
- You need a perfectly uniform colour ground — natural flax yarns carry slight tonal variation that is a characteristic of the fibre, not a defect

Care & Maintenance
-
Machine wash on a gentle/delicate cycle at 30°C / 86°F maximum — cold wash preferred for first laundering to set reactive dyes
-
Detergent: pH-neutral, colour-safe detergent only — avoid biological enzymes which can weaken natural fibres
-
Do not bleach — chlorine or oxygen bleach will damage both the linen fibre and the reactive print
-
Drying: Line dry flat or hung — do not tumble dry above low heat; high heat causes linen-cotton to shrink and print to fade prematurely
-
Ironing: Iron whilst slightly damp on the reverse side at medium heat (linen setting); this achieves the best press without stressing the print surface
-
Fabric softener: Use sparingly — repeated softener use can reduce the natural stiffness of flax, altering the hand feel over time
-
Storage: Store folded (not rolled tightly) in a cool, dry location away from prolonged direct sunlight to preserve colour integrity before use
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I order multiple prints in one order?
Yes — simply add each print as a separate line item by selecting the desired Style and adding to cart individually. Each unit is one cut. Contact us if you need coordinated cuts from the same dye lot.
How much fabric do I need for a pair of curtains?
A standard pair of floor-length curtains (220 cm drop, 1.5× fullness) typically requires 2.5–3.5 cut lengths depending on panel width. At 155 cm width, one unit may provide sufficient fabric for narrower windows (up to 80 cm finished width per panel). For wider windows, calculate: (finished panel width × 1.5) ÷ 155 cm = units required per panel, then multiply by number of panels.
Does the fabric pre-shrink before use?
Natural linen-cotton blends typically shrink 3–5% on first wash. We recommend pre-washing and pressing your fabric before cutting and sewing to prevent post-construction shrinkage. This is standard practice for any natural fibre fabric project.
Is the print on one side or both sides of the fabric?
The reactive print is applied to the face (right side) of the fabric. The reverse shows a lighter, diffused version of the design — this is normal for reactive-printed woven fabrics and not a defect. For curtains with a visible lining, use a separate lining cloth on the reverse.
Can this fabric be used for outdoor cushions?
No — this is an interior-grade fabric. It is not treated for UV resistance, moisture repellence, or mildew resistance. Outdoor use will cause rapid print fading and fibre degradation. For outdoor applications, please look for purpose-built outdoor fabric with an acrylic or solution-dyed polyester base.
What needle and thread should I use for sewing?
Use a size 80/12 or 90/14 universal or sharp sewing machine needle. A 100% cotton or cotton-wrapped polyester thread in a matching colour provides the best stitch quality with natural fibre fabrics. Stitch length of 2.5–3 mm is recommended for seam strength.
Are the colours true to the product images?
We represent all prints as accurately as our photography allows. However, monitor calibration and ambient lighting conditions at the viewing end will always introduce some variation. If colour accuracy is critical for your project, we recommend ordering a sample before committing to a large yardage purchase.
Can I request a print that is not listed?
Currently, we offer the 16 prints listed in this collection. We do not offer custom print design services for this product line. If you are looking for a specific colourway or motif not represented here, contact us — we may be able to suggest an alternative from our broader textile collection.
